This article provides a good explanation as to why math is a vital part of computing. Although the article focuses on one mathematical area it is a good example of the importance of math in general as a mechanism for promoting the development of computing power. My view is that the most important driver of improving what computers can do will be mathematics; this article demonstrates how this might happen.
